Emotional Labor exhibition at American Jewish University

Negotiations, a video I made with Jeremy J. Quinn after the first year of our son’s life, is included in the exhibition Emotional Labor at the Platt and Borstein Galleries at American Jewish University, curated by Dr. Rotem Rozental. Other artists included are Danielle Durchslag, Jordan Nasar, B. Neimeth, Kaitlynn Redell and Roni Shneior. The exhibition opened on August 25 and runs through November 1, but I am just getting to announce it now. More details here.

Kamikaze 2019 - Paul's Brain: Michele Jaquis / Paul Pattison

As Part of PØST’s Kamikaze 2019 exhibition series, Paul’s Brain is a one night only exhibition of videos, drawings, relief prints and sculptures made in collaboration with and inspired by Paul Pattison, a long time friend who suffered from epilepsy. Paul and I met in 1996 while we were students at Burren College of Art in Ireland. We stayed in touch after I returned to the States and he often visited whichever city I was living in. We began collaborating in 2007 by recording a conversation about his experiences with epilepsy and the memory loss, depression, and addiction that came with it. The intention was to develop a two-person exhibition of his relief prints with my videos and sculptures. For various reasons this project was put on hold and several years later Paul asked if I’d like to make a documentary about his epilepsy, completely forgetting that we had started that project already. Paul died in 2015, at which point I resolved myself to complete the work in his honor, using the recorded conversation as a starting point from which the rest evolved.

Embracing - collaborative exhibition at DAC Gallery

Collaborative work made by artists from ECF Westside Art Center, my students and I are on exhibit at DAC Gallery Dec. 7, 2018 - Jan. 3, 2019 - the third annual collaboration between my Uniquely Abled class in the Creative Action Program at Otis College of Art and Design and the Exceptional Children’s Foundation (ECF) Art Center Westside, a program that mentors adult artists with developmental disabilities. Some of our Favorite Things - exhibition at Ben Maltz Gallery

Opening tomorrow, Sept. 30 and running through Dec. 9, I am participating in Some of our Favorite Things at Otis College of Art and Design’s Ben Maltz Gallery: “a group exhibition of favorite art-related objects—things that have been accumulated over years, mementos inherited from family, gifts from friends and strangers, beloved books, and treasured artistic tools, each contributed by invited Otis College community, including artists, curators, writers, collectors, and cultural influencers. Each of these objects is accompanied by a description written by the lender, offering context to the work and the individual lending it. This exhibition is an exercise in storytelling, a glimpse into Otis College's far-reaching network of friends, alumni, and art world colleagues—a mapping of our multi-faceted community, as well as the great city of Los Angeles.”

soft bytes: a feminist animation festival

Also on May 19... my recently completed video, How I Read to My Son, will be included in this screening curated by the Association of Hysterical Curators. Soft Bytes, is a feminist animation festival to be held at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Los Angeles on May 19th at 7:30pm. If you are local and can make it... Veterans and Immigrants Oral History Recording SkillShare Workshop

On Saturday May 19, from 1-4pm, I will be facilitating an Oral History SkillShare workshop for anyone interested in recording stories about military and/or immigrant experiences. This workshop is part of my sabbatical project inspired by letters my great-grandfather wrote during WWI and the fact that he got his US citizenship because of his military service. Lauren Vazquez, Otis College of Art and Design MFA Public Practice alumna and former teaching assistant for my Otis Community Radio class, will be helping me collect the stories which we will share online.
